Abbas Abdullahi, Founder of TwinCities Youth Soccer Club (TCYSC)

June 17, 2025

This Isn’t Just Soccer — It’s a Movement for Somali Youth

In the heart of Minnesota’s Somali-American community, one man is using the power of soccer to build more than just athletes — he’s building confident, responsible young leaders.

Abbas Abdullahi, founder of the TwinCities Youth Soccer Club (TCYSC), started with a simple goal: to give Somali youth a positive, structured space where they could grow through sports. Today, his vision has grown into a full-scale youth soccer program that’s transforming lives across the Twin Cities.

“This isn’t just about soccer,” Abbas says. “It’s about giving young people something bigger to believe in — a team, a goal, and a future.”

A Safe Space to Grow

TCYSC offers structured soccer training, mentoring, and competitive opportunities to children and teens of all backgrounds — with a special focus on Somali and immigrant youth. For many, it’s more than a game. It’s a lifeline.

The club teaches teamwork, discipline, leadership, and respect — values that help kids succeed on the field, in the classroom, and in life. Coaches work closely with families and schools to support each child’s personal and academic growth.

A Growing Legacy

From a small group of players, TCYSC has grown into one of the most respected youth soccer organizations in the Twin Cities. Many of its players have advanced to high school, college, and regional teams. But just as importantly, they’re becoming role models in their communities.

The club continues to expand thanks to the support of parents, volunteers, and the wider Somali-American community. Abbas hopes to one day build a year-round training facility and expand access to even more youth across Minnesota.

“When we invest in our youth, we invest in our future,” Abbas says. “We’re not just training athletes — we’re building the next generation of Somali-American leaders.”
