Governor Walz’s Stance Against Trump at University Commencement

June 17, 2025

On May 17, 2025, Governor Tim Walz delivered a powerful and politically charged commencement address at the University of Minnesota Law School, marking the 137th graduation ceremony. Speaking to the Class of 2025, Walz, who served as the Democratic vice-presidential nominee in the 2024 election, used the occasion to issue a stark warning about the current state of American democracy under President Donald Trump.

A Call to Action for New Lawyers

Governor Walz began his speech by acknowledging the graduates’ achievements but quickly shifted focus to the broader political climate. He described the current era as a “genuine emergency,” emphasizing that the rule of law is under unprecedented threat. “Right now, more than any other time in my lifetime, we need you to live up to the oath that you’re about to make,” Walz urged. He highlighted the essential role that lawyers play as defenders of constitutional rights, stating, “Lawyers are our first and last line of defense.”

Critique of Trump’s Policies

Walz did not mince words in his criticism of President Trump, labeling him a “tyrant” who is systematically dismantling democratic institutions. He pointed to specific policies, such as the deportation of alleged gang members without due process to a notorious prison in El Salvador, as examples of the administration’s disregard for legal norms.

“This is what the crumbling of rule of law looks like in real time,” Walz declared. He also raised concerns about ethical lapses, including Trump’s acceptance of a private jet from the Qatari royal family.

Condemnation of Legal Complicity

Beyond the executive branch, Walz criticized major law firms that have aligned themselves with the Trump administration.

He described these firms as “feckless” and “cowardly,” accusing them of betraying their professional oaths. “It’s a flagrant betrayal of the oath they took as lawyers,” … asserted, urging the new graduates to avoid working with such entities.

Political Implications and Future Prospects

Walz’s speech also served to position himself within the Democratic Party’s evolving landscape. Following the 2024 election loss, there has been significant debate within the party about its direction and leadership. Walz’s outspoken stance against Trump and his call for a more assertive defense of democratic principles suggest he is aligning himself with a more proactive faction of the party. His name has been mentioned among potential candidates for the 2028 presidential race, alongside figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio … Gov. Gavin Newsom, and Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Audience Reception and Broader Impact

The audience at the commencement ceremony responded with loud applause, indicating strong support for Walz’s message. However, the speech also drew criticism from the White House, which accused Walz of political opportunism and pointed to his handling of the 2020 protests in Minnesota as a counterpoint.

Conclusion

Governor Tim Walz’s commencement address at the University of Minnesota Law School was more than a congratulatory speech; it was a clarion call for vigilance and action in defense of the rule of law.

By directly challenging President Trump’s policies and urging new lawyers to uphold their oaths, Walz underscored the critical role of the legal profession in safeguarding democracy.
