Tragedy Strikes on the Way to Rollag Reunion

Authorities in Minnesota have confirmed the death of a man who went missing while on his way to attend the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion in Rollag. The man, identified as 70-year-old Richard Evenson of rural Pelican Rapids, had left his home Monday evening to head to the annual reunion, a popular gathering that celebrates farming heritage with steam-powered machinery and demonstrations. He was traveling with his dog in his red Jeep Wrangler but never made it to the event.

When his family realized he had not arrived, they reported him missing and began searching along possible routes he might have taken. Ottertail County authorities then reached out to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office for assistance in the search. Deputies and family members focused their efforts on the areas between Evenson’s home and Rollag, knowing that he was last seen leaving his residence for the reunion.

On Tuesday around midday, authorities received a report of a vehicle spotted in a slough in the 1100 block of 280th Street South, an area southeast of Rollag. Deputies responded and discovered what appeared to be a vehicle submerged in the water about 25 feet from the roadway. Given the description of the missing Jeep, authorities quickly suspected it might be the vehicle they were looking for.

Valley Water Rescue, a specialized team trained in water recovery operations, was called in to help. Using their equipment, they were able to remove the submerged Jeep from the slough. Once the vehicle was pulled from the water, it was confirmed that it was the same red Jeep Wrangler belonging to Evenson. Inside, deputies discovered the body of a man and a dog.

Authorities later confirmed that the deceased was indeed Evenson, along with his dog, who had remained by his side inside the vehicle. Evenson’s remains were transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, while the dog was taken back to the family’s home as they had requested.

The news has left family, friends, and community members shocked and saddened. For many, the Steam Threshers Reunion is an event full of celebration, tradition, and connection, but this year it carried a tragic turn with the loss of someone who had been on his way to join the gathering.

The investigation into the circumstances of the incident is still active and ongoing. Authorities have not released details on what may have caused the vehicle to veer into the slough, but they continue to look into the matter. For now, the focus remains on supporting Evenson’s family and respecting their grief during this difficult time.

The discovery has also reminded the community of the importance of road safety, especially in rural areas where water, ditches, and uneven terrain can pose unexpected dangers to drivers. It is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly an ordinary drive can take a tragic turn.

As the family and community mourn the loss of Evenson, he will be remembered as someone who had been headed to an event meant to celebrate life and tradition but whose journey ended far too soon. His loyalty to his dog, and his dog’s loyalty to him in return, has also left a touching image of companionship even in the final moments.
