Minnesota CEOs Call for Calm and Cooperation After Immigration Enforcement Unrest

More than 60 chief executives from some of Minnesota’s largest companies have jointly called on government leaders to calm tensions and work together after a period of unrest triggered by a major federal immigration enforcement operation that led to two fatal shootings. The open letter, published on Sunday on the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce website, reflects growing concern within the business community about the social and economic impact of the ongoing situation across the state.

The CEOs said the recent events have deeply shaken communities and created an atmosphere of fear, uncertainty, and division. In their message, they urged state, local, and federal officials to immediately de-escalate tensions and cooperate in finding practical, lasting solutions. According to the letter, collaboration among leaders at all levels of government is essential to restoring stability and allowing people and businesses to move forward.

Among the signatories were executives from some of the most recognizable companies headquartered in Minnesota, including 3M, Best Buy, General Mills, Target, and UnitedHealth Group. Their involvement marked a notable shift, as many of these corporations had previously remained silent during the early stages of the enforcement surge and the protests that followed. Until now, most large Minnesota-based companies had avoided making public statements on the issue, choosing instead to monitor the situation quietly.

However, the pressure on businesses has steadily increased. Over the past two weeks, protests have expanded beyond government buildings and into the corporate space, with demonstrators calling out companies they believe have not taken a clear stance on the federal actions. Some businesses have been directly targeted by protesters, creating additional challenges for employees and customers. Target, one of the companies whose leadership signed the letter, has been among those facing public scrutiny.

The unrest has also spilled into the online space, amplifying tensions. Earlier this month, a Minnesota hotel faced intense backlash after it declined to provide accommodations to federal immigration agents. The hotel later issued a public apology, stating that the refusal went against its internal policies. The incident highlighted how quickly businesses can become caught in the middle of a highly charged national debate, even when trying to navigate routine operational decisions.

Beyond public pressure and protests, the economic consequences of the situation have become increasingly clear. The state of Minnesota and the Twin Cities recently filed a lawsuit asking a federal judge to halt the immigration operations. In the filing, officials warned of severe economic harm, noting that some businesses have reported sales declines of up to 80 percent since the enforcement actions began. These losses, they argued, threaten jobs, local economies, and the overall financial health of communities across the state.

In their letter, the CEOs emphasized that the current climate is not sustainable for workers, families, or businesses. They stressed the need for peace and focused cooperation, saying that prolonged conflict only deepens divisions and slows economic recovery. The executives framed their appeal not as a political statement, but as a call for stability, safety, and common ground.

The letter concluded with a message of hope, urging leaders to act quickly and responsibly so that Minnesota can return to building a strong and prosperous future. The CEOs said their companies, employees, and customers all depend on an environment where people feel safe, respected, and able to go about their daily lives without fear or disruption. By speaking out together, the business leaders signaled that the situation has reached a point where silence is no longer an option, and collective action is needed to move the state forward.
