Former Federal Prosecutor Julie Le Launches Campaign for Minnesota Congressional Seat

A former federal prosecutor who recently drew national attention for criticizing the immigration system has announced that she is running for Congress in Minnesota. Julie Le, who previously worked for the U.S. government on immigration cases, says she wants to move from the courtroom into politics so she can help change the laws she once had to enforce.

Le gained widespread attention earlier this year during a court hearing when she openly expressed frustration about the immigration enforcement system. While appearing before a federal judge, she said she felt overwhelmed by the number of cases and the challenges government lawyers were facing. Her emotional remarks, including saying that the system and her job were deeply frustrating, quickly spread online and sparked debate about how immigration cases were being handled in Minnesota and across the United States.

Shortly after the incident, Le was removed from her role handling immigration cases. Despite that setback, she has now decided to enter politics. She plans to run as a Democrat for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, a seat currently held by Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar. The district includes Minneapolis and several nearby communities and is considered one of the state’s most Democratic areas.

Le says her campaign is not about attacking her opponent but about offering voters another choice and bringing her own experiences to Washington. She believes her background as both an immigrant and a federal prosecutor gives her a unique perspective on issues that affect many Americans.

Born in Vietnam, Le came to the United States as a refugee in the early 1990s. Her family settled in the U.S. seeking safety and better opportunities. She often credits her parents’ sacrifices and the support of public programs for helping her succeed in school and eventually become a lawyer.

Le later worked for the federal government, including roles connected to immigration enforcement. During that time, she handled cases involving immigrants who were detained or facing deportation. The work gave her a close look at how complicated and emotionally difficult the immigration system can be for both families and government officials.

Her experience during the recent immigration crackdown in Minnesota played a major role in her decision to run for office. She said the legal system often leaves government lawyers trying to manage policies they did not create. According to Le, the courtroom moment that went viral reflected a deeper frustration with how immigration laws are written and enforced.

If elected, Le says one of her top priorities will be immigration reform. She supports creating clearer pathways for immigrants to gain legal status while also maintaining enforcement of the law. She argues that the current system is confusing and puts pressure on both immigrants and the officials responsible for handling cases.

Beyond immigration, Le says she wants to focus on education, healthcare, and support for young people. She has spoken about expanding financial aid programs that help students afford college, something she says played a key role in her own education. She also supports increasing funding for arts and music programs in public schools and improving access to healthcare for families.

Le is expected to formally launch her campaign at a public event in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Her entry into the race sets up a competitive Democratic primary, as several candidates are expected to seek the party’s nomination for the congressional seat.

Political observers say the race will likely draw attention because of Le’s unusual path into politics and the viral moment that first brought her into the national spotlight. For Le, however, the campaign is about turning frustration into action. She says the experience of working inside the system convinced her that real change requires new laws and stronger leadership in Congress.

She hopes voters will see her story as proof that public service can take many forms. After years of representing the government in court, Le now wants to represent the people of Minnesota in Washington, where she believes she can help shape policies that affect millions of Americans.
