Minnesota Runner Sets World Record Carrying Canoe in Marathon

Paul Shol of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, has done something few people could even imagine: he ran a full marathon while carrying a canoe on his shoulders. An experienced runner who often tackles 50- and 100-mile trail races, Shol decided to try the Ely Marathon’s canoe portaging division after a friend told him about it. The challenge? Running 26.2 miles while balancing a 26-pound canoe overhead.

Shol’s preparation took about a month, during which he practiced balancing the canoe and using a yoke with shoulder pads wrapped in towels. He even developed strategies to deal with the wind, which can act like a sail and slow you down. Despite the unusual challenge, Shol successfully completed the race and won, setting a world record as the first person to finish the canoe portage marathon in under four hours.

“The previous record was held by a man from Iowa, but I thought, it should be a Minnesotan,” Shol said. That friendly motivation helped push him through a grueling race. At the race, Shol’s canoe carried a visible message: “Joshua 1:9. Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God goes with you wherever you go.” For Shol, the challenge was as much spiritual as physical. He believes that stepping out of your comfort zone, whether in sports, work, or family life, is an opportunity for growth and to experience the support of God.

During the race, Shol said some spectators were surprised, even asking when he would start paddling. He reminded them there was no paddling involved—just running. Despite the added difficulty, Shol enjoyed the experience and is still considering whether he will compete in the event again next year.

Shol’s achievement highlights the thrill of pushing personal limits and trying something completely different. While marathons are already demanding, adding a canoe to the mix transforms it into a unique test of strength, endurance, and determination.
