A large-scale recovery effort along the Mississippi River navigation channel has concluded in tragedy after a 27-foot pontoon boat overturns on Lake Pepin late Saturday night, leaving three individuals dead. Local emergency dispatchers for the Pepin County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin and the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office in Minnesota initially received a frantic 911 call at approximately 10:45 p.m. on July 11. The caller reported audible screams for help originating from the open water on the lake. First responders rushing to the scene discovered the capsized vessel floating just offshore from the landmark YMCA Camp on Deer Island, situated on the Wisconsin side of the river.
Upon arrival, emergency crews successfully rescued three survivors who were found hanging onto the overturned hull of the watercraft. The survivors informed law enforcement personnel that three other passengers who had been on the pontoon with them remained missing in the water. This disclosure prompted the immediate mobilization of a massive multi-agency search and rescue operation utilizing rescue boats, specialized drones, and helicopters from multiple state and county jurisdictions. Despite the extensive tactical deployment, the search shifted into a recovery operation on Sunday when the bodies of the three missing individuals were pulled from the lake.
Preliminary findings from local law enforcement indicate that the fatal incident occurred after the 27-foot pontoon collided with a commercial barge traveling through the primary navigation channel of the 22-mile-long lake. While the accident occurred near the geographical perimeter of the Deer Island YMCA youth camp, Pepin County Sheriff Joel Wener officially confirmed that no camp staff or youth campers were involved in the vessel capsizing. The bodies of the deceased victims have been transferred to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office in Minnesota to determine the official causes of death.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has assumed the role of lead agency investigating the precise maritime dynamics that caused the catastrophic weekend collision. Authorities have withheld the names and identities of both the survivors and the deceased pending comprehensive notification of their families. As commercial and recreational traffic continues along the highly popular waterway, regional safety officials are reiterating the absolute necessity of maintaining extreme visual vigilance and using proper lighting protocols when navigating near heavy commercial vessels after dusk.
