In the heart of every community lies a story that has the power to spark change. For Amal Mohamoud, that story began with a woman named Hana—her mother, her anchor, and the quiet force behind a new movement for healing. Out of love, loss, and a deep longing to honor her mother’s legacy, Amal founded The Hana Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way mental health is understood and embraced—particularly within Black and immigrant communities.
Hana’s journey was one of quiet strength. Like many women in immigrant families, she bore the weight of sacrifice, cultural transition, and unspoken emotional pain. Behind her resilience, however, was a struggle with mental health—one that went unseen and unsupported. The cultural stigma around mental illness, especially in Somali and African communities, often forces people to suffer in silence. When Hana passed away, it left more than grief—it ignited a mission.
“My mother gave everything for us,” Amal says. “But she never had the space to fully care for herself. I realized that too many of our people are still living in that silence—and it’s time to break it.”
The Hana Legacy Foundation was born from that realization. It isn’t just a tribute—it’s a call to action. Amal’s mission is simple but powerful: to create safe, compassionate spaces where mental health is no longer hidden behind shame or misunderstood as weakness.
The foundation aims to dismantle harmful stigmas and raise awareness, particularly within communities where mental health conversations are still taboo.
At the heart of the foundation’s message is a powerful slogan: “Reclaim Your Story, Embrace Your Strength.” It encourages individuals to take ownership of their mental health journey—to speak, to seek help, and to heal. The foundation envisions a future where stories like Hana’s are no longer buried in silence, but shared with courage to inspire change.
Though still in its early stages, The Hana Legacy Foundation is already building momentum. Through educational content, social media engagement, and community partnerships, it is slowly reshaping narratives and opening minds. The organization welcomes collaboration from those who share its vision, and it is laying the foundation for events, resources, and outreach efforts that will serve those most in need.
In communities where the conversation around mental health has long been absent, The Hana Legacy Foundation is offering something rare: hope, honesty, and healing. Hana’s story, once lived in quiet perseverance, now lives on as a legacy of love—a legacy that is already changing lives.
As the foundation continues to grow, Spotlight Magazine is proud to uplift its message and honor the woman whose memory is inspiring a new generation of healing.
