In a viral video, Shirley is seen knocking on the doors of several daycare centers in Minneapolis, questioning staff and suggesting that some facilities may have kept public funds meant to support childcare for low-income families. The video spread quickly across social media platforms and was reshared by high-profile figures, including Elon Musk and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, further fueling public debate and political tension.
Following the online uproar, Minnesota authorities launched their own investigation into the allegations. According to a report by Boston-based station WCVB, the state concluded that the daycare centers in question were operating as expected and found no evidence to support claims of widespread wrongdoing in those facilities. Despite these findings, the controversy has continued to follow Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, whose name appeared repeatedly in Shirley’s video and in the political discussion that followed.
Amid speculation and online rumors, questions arose about whether Governor Walz was planning to resign. Walz has since made it clear that he is not stepping down from office. However, he has announced that he will not seek re-election for a third term. In a public statement shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Walz said he had decided to end his re-election campaign, citing the ongoing fraud investigations and what he described as political attacks by Republicans that, in his view, have complicated efforts to address the issue responsibly.
Walz explained that the situation in Minnesota demands his full attention as governor and that continuing a campaign would distract from that responsibility. He said that spending time defending his own political future would take away from time better spent protecting Minnesotans and addressing those who abuse public programs. According to Walz, his priority is to focus on governing and ensuring that state resources are protected, rather than engaging in an increasingly heated political battle. He confirmed that he will complete his current term, which ends in January 2027.
In his remarks, Walz strongly criticized individuals and groups he believes are exploiting the situation for personal or political gain. He spoke of organized criminal networks that have taken advantage of Minnesota’s public assistance programs, as well as political actors who he says are using the crisis to divide people and score points. While he did not mention Nick Shirley by name in every instance, his comments appeared to reference the YouTuber and others promoting the allegations online.
The governor also turned his criticism toward President Donald Trump and his allies, accusing them of contributing to a hostile political climate. Walz claimed that their rhetoric and actions risk making Minnesota a more divided and less compassionate place. He argued that such approaches pit communities against one another rather than addressing real problems in a constructive way.
At the federal level, the controversy has already had financial consequences. According to reporting by The Hill, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services temporarily froze federal funding for some childcare providers in Minnesota while fraud concerns were reviewed. Deputy HHS Secretary Jim O’Neill said the federal government would not release funds until it was confident that the money would not be misused.
Walz defended his administration’s record, saying Minnesota has taken concrete steps over the past several years to identify and stop fraud. He noted that state employees who failed to do their jobs were fired, and that individuals found guilty of stealing public funds have been prosecuted and sent to jail. He also said the state shut down certain funding streams and suspended programs where serious criminal activity was discovered. While acknowledging that more work remains, Walz argued that partisan fighting has made it harder to move forward effectively.
